Arsenal have made significant progress in their attempt to sign Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid, according to reports. The 24-year-old forward has expressed his desire to leave the Spanish capital in search of a club capable of competing for major honours, including league titles and the Champions League.
Alvarez reportedly informed Atletico officials of his wish to be transferred, stating he wants to fulfil his dream of playing for a more ambitious club. While Barcelona is said to be his preferred destination, their financial limitations – an initial €100 million bid was rejected – are hindering any potential deal.
Arsenal, along with Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain, are now emerging as strong contenders for Alvarez’s signature. CaughtOffside reports that Atletico are now ‘ready to approve’ a transfer to the Emirates Stadium, with sporting director Andrea Berta holding direct talks with the player and finding him ‘open to returning to the Premier League.’
Atletico are reportedly more inclined to sell to a Premier League club rather than strengthen rivals Barcelona or Real Madrid. Previously, the Spanish club demanded any interested party meet Alvarez’s €500 million release clause, but a deal worth less than €200 million now appears possible.
This potential acquisition comes after Arsenal missed out on Morgan Rogers, who has joined Chelsea. The Gunners have already secured Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge for €40 million and are also pursuing other attacking options, including Bradley Barcola and Yan Diomande. They remain interested in Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, with another bid expected. A successful move for Alvarez would significantly bolster Arsenal’s attacking options and solidify their ambitions for the upcoming season.
