Arsenal have reportedly made significant headway in their attempt to sign Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid this summer. According to CaughtOffside, the Gunners have achieved ‘groundbreaking progress’ in negotiations, with Atletico now ‘ready to approve’ a transfer to the Emirates Stadium.
Alvarez has expressed his desire to leave Atletico Madrid in search of a club capable of competing for major honours, including league titles and Champions League success. The striker confirmed to reporters during the World Cup that he had communicated his wishes to the club and believes a transfer is the best outcome for all parties. While Barcelona is reportedly Alvarez’s preferred destination, the club’s financial constraints make a deal unlikely.
Atletico Madrid initially rejected a bid of €100 million (£85m) from Barcelona, and have previously demanded that any club interested in Alvarez meet his €500 million (£426m) release clause. However, the latest reports suggest Arsenal could secure the player for a fee under €200 million (£170m). The Spanish club reportedly favour selling to a Premier League side rather than strengthening direct rivals in Spain.
Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta has held direct discussions with Alvarez, discovering the player is ‘open to returning to the Premier League’. This development comes after Arsenal missed out on Morgan Rogers, who has opted to join Chelsea in a deal worth £117 million. Despite this setback, Arsenal remain active in the transfer market, having already agreed a €40 million (£34m) deal for Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge and continuing to pursue other attacking options like Bradley Barcola and Yan Diomande. They are also still interested in Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.
Securing Alvarez would represent a major coup for Mikel Arteta, providing a significant upgrade in attacking firepower. The move would further solidify Arsenal’s position as a force in both the Premier League and Champions League.
