Arsenal have reportedly paused their pursuit of Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, according to updates from The Chronicle’s chief Newcastle reporter, Lee Ryder. The Gunners had previously submitted bids of £55 million and £65 million for the Brazilian, both of which were rejected by Newcastle.
Guimaraes, who joined Newcastle in January 2022, has reportedly informed his current club of his desire to move to the Emirates Stadium, seeking Champions League football and a greater challenge for major honours. However, Arsenal have not held fresh talks with Newcastle this week, increasing the likelihood of Guimaraes remaining at St James’ Park.
Newcastle are holding firm on their valuation of Guimaraes, reportedly demanding a fee of £100 million – the same price they paid for Sandro Tonali. The club’s stance is strengthened by recent departures within the squad, including Tonali and Anthony Gordon, making them reluctant to lose another key player. Arsenal believe a fee closer to £80 million is more appropriate, citing Guimaraes’ age as a factor.
Sources suggest that Arsenal may be using Guimaraes’ desire to join them as leverage in negotiations, but the lack of recent contact indicates a shift in focus. The club is now prioritizing the signing of Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers as a new left winger, and are also exploring options for a world-class striker. Eddie Howe, Newcastle’s head coach, currently expects Guimaraes to continue training with the first team, dismissing fears of a potential refusal to train similar to Alexander Isak’s recent actions.
Arsenal were aiming for a quadruple deal worth £366 million, including Guimaraes and Rogers, but the stalled negotiations with Newcastle suggest a more streamlined approach to their summer transfer business. The situation remains fluid, and it remains to be seen if Arsenal will return with an improved offer, but for now, Guimaraes’ future appears increasingly likely to remain with Newcastle.
