Brazilian midfielder Arthur is returning to Juventus after Gremio announced they failed to reach an economic agreement to secure his permanent transfer. The 27-year-old’s loan spell with the Brazilian club, which began in August, will conclude on June 30th, 2026, with the player now set to return to Italy.
Arthur initially joined Juventus from Barcelona in June 2020 as part of a deal that saw Miralem Pjanic move in the opposite direction. Despite 63 appearances for the Turin club, registering one goal and one assist, he has not played for Juventus since the Coppa Italia final loss to Inter on May 11th, 2022. Since arriving at Juventus, the midfielder has been loaned to Liverpool, Fiorentina, and Girona.
Gremio confirmed the breakdown in negotiations in an official statement, expressing their regret that an agreement could not be reached despite a mutual desire to keep Arthur at the Arena. The club had presented a contract proposal, but financial terms proved insurmountable. Reports had suggested a potential four-year deal could have been agreed upon for a fee between €8-10 million, a figure Juventus were reportedly seeking, or potentially even less.
With a return to Gremio now off the cards, Arthur is expected to travel back to Italy to discuss his future with Juventus. The arrival of new Juventus sporting director Giovanni Carnevali could lead to fresh talks regarding a potential move within Serie A. However, a return to Brazil or a transfer to Turkey have not been ruled out, with several clubs in those leagues potentially interested in acquiring the former Barcelona player. Arthur’s current contract with Juventus is valid until June 30th, 2027, meaning the club retains significant control over his next destination.
