Aston Villa have completed the signing of Johan Manzambi from SC Freiburg, the Premier League club announced on Friday evening. The 20-year-old Swiss international joins on a permanent transfer for a reported fee of €70 million, a club record for Freiburg.
Manzambi’s move to Villa Park comes after a breakthrough year for both club and country. He was a pivotal figure in Freiburg’s run to the UEFA Europa League final, where they were ultimately defeated by Aston Villa themselves. Following the season, Manzambi was named the Europa League’s Young Player of the Season, further enhancing his reputation as one of Europe’s most promising young talents.
He recently represented Switzerland at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, making a significant impact with three goals and two assists in four appearances. His performances on the world stage reportedly made it impossible for Freiburg to retain his services for another season, despite their desire to do so.
SC Freiburg sporting director Jochen Saier acknowledged the difficulty of keeping Manzambi, stating that the “shared journey from the U-19s to the Europa League final was special for both Johan and us.” Saier added that after “truly intensive talks and negotiations” with Aston Villa, a mutually beneficial solution was reached. The €70 million fee surpasses the previous club record transfer fees paid for both Kevin Schade and Merlin Röhl, who each cost Freiburg €25 million.
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery will be hoping Manzambi can seamlessly integrate into his midfield and provide additional creativity and attacking impetus. The signing demonstrates Villa’s ambition to continue competing at the highest level, both domestically and in Europe, and further strengthens their squad ahead of the new season.
