Aston Villa will not be exercising their option to permanently sign Douglas Luiz, meaning the Brazilian midfielder will return to Juventus this summer. The club had the opportunity to purchase Luiz for a reported €25 million, but have decided against it following a loan spell that yielded limited playing time.
Luiz made 20 appearances across all competitions for Villa, totaling just 881 minutes on the pitch and contributing only one goal and one assist. His season was hampered by physical issues, preventing him from establishing himself as a regular starter under manager Unai Emery, despite featuring in the first half of the campaign. He played only two minutes in the Europa League final victory against Freiburg.
The move represents a disappointing outcome for a player Juventus originally signed for €50 million (including the registrations of Barrenechea and Iling Junior) in the summer of 2024. Previous loan spells at Nottingham Forest and now Aston Villa have failed to provide Luiz with a consistent platform to showcase his abilities. While some Aston Villa fans expressed disappointment at the decision, others were more critical of the player’s impact.
Social media responses from Villa supporters were divided, with some arguing he was worth the €25 million fee, while others made light of his performances. Some fans jokingly suggested a move to Manchester United, while others referenced his previous form before joining Juventus. Some Villa fans directed their comments towards Juventus, highlighting Luiz's Europa League winner's medal.
Luiz will now return to Turin, but his future remains uncertain. Juventus may attempt to sell the midfielder, but are unlikely to recoup the original €50 million investment, with a minimum of €25 million needed to avoid a financial loss. A further loan move, potentially with an obligation to buy, appears the most likely outcome, mirroring the situation with fellow Brazilian midfielder Arthur, who is also expected to return to Juventus this summer.
