Atalanta's Third-Choice Goalkeeper Bernasconi Expected to Depart This Summer
Atalanta third-choice goalkeeper Marco Bernasconi is expected to leave the club in the upcoming summer transfer window, according to sources close to the club. The 22-year-old Italian was notably absent from the squad list for Monday's Serie A match against Cagliari, with manager Raffaele Palladino citing an injury as the official reason for his omission alongside that of fellow goalkeeper Francesco Rossi.
While the club has not made any formal announcement regarding a transfer, his consistent exclusion from matchday squads in recent weeks has fueled speculation about an imminent departure. Bernasconi, a product of Atalanta's youth academy, has found first-team opportunities extremely limited behind established number one Marco Carnesecchi and veteran backup Antonio Sportiello. He has yet to make a senior competitive appearance for La Dea.
The situation points towards a logical move for a young goalkeeper needing playing time to develop his career. A loan deal to a club in Serie B or lower in Serie A is considered the most probable outcome, allowing Bernasconi to gain valuable experience. A permanent sale has not been ruled out, though his contract situation and the club's valuation remain undisclosed.
For Atalanta, allowing Bernasconi to depart would streamline the goalkeeping department and could free up a squad space. The Bergamo club has shown a consistent model of developing and then moving on young talents, either on loan or through sales with buy-back clauses, to facilitate their growth and generate funds. Carnesecchi's firm hold on the starting position and Sportiello's reliable backup role make Bernasconi's path to the first team currently blocked.
His expected exit follows a pattern of Atalanta managing its squad depth efficiently, particularly in positions of strength. The club's focus will remain on securing European qualification through Serie A while also competing in the latter stages of the Coppa Italia. Bernasconi's development will now likely continue elsewhere, with the summer window providing the clearest opportunity for a resolution.
