Atalanta's Scamacca fit for key Juventus clash after injury recovery
Atalanta striker Gianluca Scamacca has recovered from a muscle injury and is available for selection ahead of the team's crucial Serie A match against Juventus on Saturday. The club confirmed the forward has returned to full training after missing the recent international break, providing a significant boost for manager Raffaele Palladino.
The Italian international sustained a first-grade lesion to his right adductor muscle on March 21, an injury believed to have originated during the second leg of Atalanta's Champions League round of 16 tie against Bayern Munich. This forced him to withdraw from the Italy squad for their 2026 World Cup qualifying playoff matches against Northern Ireland and Bosnia. Scamacca, a 25-year-old Roman, has now completed his rehabilitation at the club's Zingonia training complex and has been working with the main squad.
His return comes at a pivotal moment for Atalanta, who are locked in a tight battle for a top-four finish and the Champions League qualification that comes with it. A victory against direct rivals Juventus at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo would significantly enhance their prospects. The fixture is followed closely by the second leg of their Coppa Italia semi-final against Lazio, making squad depth and key player availability paramount.
Scamacca has been a central figure in Atalanta's attack since his €25 million move from West Ham United last summer, scoring 12 goals across all competitions this season. His physical presence and finishing ability have been integral to Palladino's system, making his recovery a timely development for the run-in.
However, defensive concerns remain for the Bergamo club. According to the club's medical update, Swedish defender Isak Hien is a doubt for the Juventus match after suffering a distraction to the musculo-tendinous junction of his left biceps femoris while on international duty. Hien picked up the issue during Sweden's playoff semi-final against Ukraine in Seville on March 26. His potential absence could force a reshuffle in a backline that will be tasked with containing Juventus's attack.
The fitness news underscores the demanding schedule top clubs face, balancing domestic ambitions with European and cup competitions. For Atalanta, having a striker of Scamacca's caliber back in contention not only boosts their options but also provides a psychological lift ahead of a defining period in their season. His availability allows Palladino to field his preferred attacking lineup as they seek a statement victory to solidify their Champions League credentials.
