Atlético Madrid are preparing a bid for Olympique de Marseille winger Mason Greenwood, according to reports in L’Équipe. The Spanish club are reportedly seeking to bolster their attacking options and have identified the 24-year-old Englishman as a key target.
Greenwood joined Marseille last summer and has featured regularly for the Ligue 1 side, contributing with goals and assists. However, Marseille are facing financial difficulties and are expected to sell several players in the upcoming transfer window to alleviate pressure on their finances. A 'fire sale' is anticipated, with a list of players deemed surplus to requirements circulated amongst agents via WhatsApp, including Ulisses Garcia, Amine Harit, Neal Maupay, Geoffrey Kondogbia, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Atlético manager Diego Simeone is believed to have personally approved the pursuit of Greenwood, reportedly favouring his finishing ability over his potential as a traditional right winger. The player is also attracting interest from Serie A side Roma and Turkish outfit Fenerbahçe, presenting potential competition for Atlético.
Marseille are reportedly hoping to recoup around €1.5 million for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with clubs in Turkey, the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Spain all monitoring the situation. Other players potentially on their way out of the club include Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, Leonardo Balerdi, Angel Gomes, and Hamed Traoré. The potential departures signify a significant reshaping of the Marseille squad as the club navigates its financial challenges. A successful transfer for Greenwood would provide Atlético with an additional attacking threat and further solidify their squad ahead of next season.
