Atlético Madrid have emerged as the frontrunners in the pursuit of Olympique de Marseille forward Mason Greenwood, according to reports in L’Équipe. Despite strong interest from Fenerbahçe, Greenwood is believed to favour a move to the Spanish capital, having previously played in the country during a loan spell with Getafe last season.
Greenwood joined Marseille from Manchester United in September 2023 on a season-long loan, which was later made permanent in August 2024. He made 31 appearances for the French club across all competitions, scoring 12 goals. However, his future at the club has been the subject of speculation in recent weeks, with both Atlético and Fenerbahçe submitting formal offers.
Atlético’s offer currently stands at €45 million with a potential €5 million in bonuses, a figure that Marseille reportedly views more favourably than Fenerbahçe’s bid of €40 million plus bonuses. A key factor in Atlético’s appeal appears to be the contract terms offered, with a proposed five-year deal worth between €5-6 million net per season, alongside image rights. Fenerbahçe had offered a four-year contract with a higher salary of €7-8 million per season net.
Sources close to the deal suggest that Atlético are attempting to convince Greenwood by highlighting the potential for him to become a key player, potentially succeeding Antoine Griezmann and establishing himself as an idol at a top European club. The possibility of a future return to the Premier League is also being presented as a long-term benefit. Atlético manager Diego Simeone reportedly approved the signing of Greenwood in June and intends to discuss tactics with the player.
Complicating matters for Marseille was a clause in Greenwood’s contract stipulating that he would receive 8.5% of any transfer fee. However, L’Équipe reports that Greenwood has waived this percentage for both Atlético and Fenerbahçe, simplifying the negotiations. Atlético’s sporting director, Mateu Alemany, began exploring the transfer in May, carefully examining the financial details of the deal between Marseille and Manchester United.
