Atlético Madrid have reiterated their stance that Julian Alvarez is not for sale, despite continued interest from FC Barcelona. Club director general Miguel Angel Gil Marin stated emphatically in an interview published Friday that the club has no intention of parting with the Argentinian forward, even for substantial offers. According to reports, Atlético have already rejected bids from the Catalan club.
Gil Marin claimed he has directly communicated this position to both Alvarez and his representatives, as well as to Barcelona president Joan Laporta. He accused Laporta of “playing a game” with the media and supporters, but acknowledged a good personal relationship with his counterpart. “I told him clearly: 'Please stop that. We do not want to sell him and we will not sell him, stop insisting,'” Gil Marin said. He suggested Laporta is deliberately prolonging the situation for his own purposes.
Alvarez, 26, is currently under contract with Atlético until 2030, having joined the club in 2019. He publicly expressed a desire to leave the Madrid club during the recent World Cup, with Barcelona identified as a potential destination. The forward has been a key component of Atlético’s attack in recent seasons, contributing consistently with goals and assists. Last season, he scored 18 goals in all competitions for Diego Simeone’s side.
Alvarez is currently with the Argentinian national team, preparing for the final of a major international tournament against Spain on Sunday. He will be hoping to add to his international accolades, having already been a part of the squad that won the tournament two editions ago. Atlético’s firm stance effectively ends Barcelona’s pursuit, at least for the time being, and ensures Simeone retains a vital attacking asset. This outcome solidifies Atlético’s position as a competitive force in La Liga and the Champions League.
