Atletico Madrid have initiated discussions with Bayer Leverkusen regarding the transfer of Spanish left-back Alejandro Grimaldo, with Leverkusen valuing the player between €10-13 million, according to transfer reporter Matteo Moretto. The club has reportedly offered Grimaldo a contract extending to 2029, with an additional optional year, suggesting advanced negotiations on personal terms, as reported by Nicolò Schira.
This is not the first instance of Atletico’s interest in Grimaldo. Reports from SER and AS in May 2025 indicated a previous pursuit, which stalled due to Leverkusen’s then-asking price of approximately €30 million. Grimaldo later confirmed these conversations, stating a move did not come to fruition. The current, significantly reduced valuation presents a more viable opportunity for both clubs.
The current asking price represents a substantial decrease from Leverkusen’s earlier demands, making the operation more affordable than alternatives like Marc Cucurella, as noted by Spanish outlets. Grimaldo’s market value, estimated at around €20 million by Transfermarkt, suggests Leverkusen are willing to accept a discount, influenced by his contract expiring in 2027 and the desire to secure a transfer fee before he potentially becomes a free agent.
Leverkusen’s willingness to sell is also driven by their own circumstances. Finishing sixth in the Bundesliga means they will not participate in next season’s Champions League, and the arrival of new coach Carles Martínez Novell is prompting a squad reshuffle. German reports link Grimaldo’s potential departure to this rebuild, with the club aiming to raise around €60 million for reinforcements. A clause reportedly exists that facilitates a return to LaLiga for a fee in the range of €15-20 million.
Grimaldo’s profile aligns with Diego Simeone’s tactical preferences, as an attacking wing-back with a strong record of goals and assists – he recorded 14 goals and 14 assists in 46 appearances during the 2025/26 season. A fee near the lower end of Leverkusen’s asking price would represent sound financial management for Atletico, who are carefully planning their summer spending. Barcelona are also monitoring Grimaldo as potential cover for Alejandro Balde, adding competition to the deal.
The next step hinges on Atletico submitting a formal bid within Leverkusen’s price range and the German club’s response, given their need for funds. Grimaldo’s desire to return to Spain is a positive factor, but Barcelona’s interest means Atletico must act decisively to secure his signature. A formal offer to Leverkusen is anticipated as the next significant development.
