Atlético Madrid president Enrique Cerezo repeatedly referred to Julian Alvarez as “Julian Lopez” during a press conference addressing ongoing speculation linking the Argentinian forward with a move to Real Madrid, according to L’Équipe.
The slip of the tongue occurred as Cerezo reiterated Atlético’s stance that Alvarez will remain with the club next season unless his release clause is met. That clause is reported to be €500 million, effectively pricing out most potential suitors.
Recent reports have suggested Real Madrid made a bid of €150 million for Alvarez, but Cerezo dismissed these claims by emphasizing the high release clause. The repeated misstatement of Alvarez’s surname has fueled further discussion among fans and media outlets, though it appears to be an accidental error.
Alvarez joined Atlético Madrid in January 2023 from River Plate, quickly becoming a key player in Diego Simeone’s squad. He has made 32 appearances for the club across all competitions, scoring 9 goals and providing 5 assists. His arrival added a new dimension to Atlético’s attack, offering both pace and clinical finishing.
Prior to joining Atlético, Alvarez was a standout performer for River Plate, winning the Argentine Primera División title in 2021 and 2023. He also played a vital role in Argentina’s successful 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign, scoring four goals en route to the trophy. His performances in Qatar significantly raised his profile in European football.
The incident with Cerezo’s misstatement is unlikely to alter the transfer situation, but it highlights the intense scrutiny surrounding Alvarez’s future. Atlético Madrid are determined to retain their key assets, and the substantial release clause serves as a strong deterrent to potential buyers. This situation reinforces Atlético’s position as a selling club only at a premium, and Alvarez’s continued presence will be crucial to their ambitions in La Liga and the Champions League.
