Augsburg secure Bundesliga survival with draw against Frankfurt
Augsburg mathematically secured their place in next season's Bundesliga after a 1-1 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt at the WWK Arena on Saturday. The point, combined with St. Pauli's defeat to Heidenheim, guarantees the Fuggerstädter will play a 14th consecutive top-flight season. The match was preceded by a tribute to former Augsburg goalkeeper Alex Manninger, who passed away this week at the age of 48.
Anton Kade gave the hosts the lead just before halftime, finishing after Michael Gregoritsch's effort struck the post. Eintracht Frankfurt, who had seen January signing Love Arrhov hit the woodwork earlier, found a second-half equalizer through Ritsu Doan. The Japanese winger's goal came shortly after he received a yellow card that rules him out of Frankfurt's next match against HSV.
The result extends Augsburg's winless run at home to three games but, more importantly, ends any lingering relegation fears. Frankfurt goalkeeper Michael Zetterer preserved the point with a late, superb save to deny former Frankfurt player Marius Wolf. The draw sees Eintracht Frankfurt move back into seventh place, albeit only on goal difference ahead of Freiburg's scheduled match against Borussia Dortmund.
For Augsburg, survival represents a significant achievement in a season of transition. The club invested in several winter signings, including goalscorer Kade and Gregoritsch, whose contributions proved crucial in the final stretch. Manager Enrico Maaßen will now plan for a more stable campaign next year, with the immediate pressure of the relegation battle now lifted.
Frankfurt's focus shifts entirely to securing European qualification for next season. Currently in the final spot for the Europa Conference League, their fate remains in their own hands with two matches remaining. The performance of winter arrivals like Arrhov, who was active in his starting debut, offers encouragement for the run-in as they aim to return to continental competition.
