FC Augsburg have reached an agreement to sign Hennes Behrens from TSG Hoffenheim, according to Sky Germany. The 21-year-old left-back will move to the WWK Arena on a permanent transfer, bringing an end to his time with Hoffenheim, where he had fallen down the pecking order.
The transfer fee is reported to be €3.5 million, with an additional €1 million in potential bonuses dependent on performance. Hoffenheim have also negotiated a 10 percent sell-on clause, meaning they will receive a percentage of any future transfer fee should Augsburg sell Behrens. The player has agreed to a long-term contract with Augsburg, extending to 2031, and an official announcement is anticipated shortly.
Behrens spent the second half of the 2023-24 season on loan at 1. FC Heidenheim, where he quickly established himself as a key player despite the club’s eventual relegation. He made 16 appearances for Heidenheim, scoring one goal and providing two assists, demonstrating his attacking capabilities from the left-back position. Prior to the loan move, Behrens had made limited appearances for Hoffenheim’s first team, largely featuring for their reserve side.
The move to Augsburg represents a significant opportunity for Behrens to secure regular first-team football in the Bundesliga. Augsburg are bolstering their defensive options ahead of the new season, and the signing of the young German international adds competition for places. Hoffenheim will be looking to reinvest the transfer fee as they continue their own squad rebuild under new management. This transfer allows Behrens to continue his development in the Bundesliga, while providing Augsburg with a promising young talent.
