Augsburg host Frankfurt in key Bundesliga European qualification clash
Eintracht Frankfurt travel to face Augsburg on Saturday in a Bundesliga fixture with significant implications for the European qualification race. Frankfurt, currently eighth with 42 points from 30 games, sit just one point outside the Conference League places, a position that could be upgraded to the Europa League depending on the league's coefficient. Augsburg, in ninth, are aiming for a first top-half finish in 11 years after a dramatic 2-1 victory over champions Bayer Leverkusen last weekend.
That late win at the BayArena, secured by a Fabian Rieder penalty in the 97th minute, ended a five-game winless run for Manuel Baum's side. Augsburg will now seek to build momentum at the WWK Arena, where they have secured six of their ten league wins this season. However, they face a historical challenge, having failed to beat Frankfurt in their last four attempts across all competitions. Their most recent victory against die Adler came in December 2023, a 2-1 success at Deutsche Bank Park.
Frankfurt's own European push suffered a setback with a 3-1 home defeat to RB Leipzig last Saturday, their first loss at home since January. Manager Dino Toppmöller will now look for a response on the road, where his team secured a 2-1 win at Wolfsburg in their last away fixture. A victory in Augsburg would mark Frankfurt's first consecutive away league wins this season and complete a league double over their opponents for the first time since the 2020-21 campaign, following a 1-0 win in the reverse fixture courtesy of a Ritsu Doan goal.
Augsburg have been boosted by the return to fitness of defender Chrislain Matsima, who could feature for the first time since the December meeting with Frankfurt. The hosts are expected to field a side including Rieder, who scored twice against Leverkusen, and experienced striker Michael Gregoritsch. Frankfurt, meanwhile, will be without several squad players including Nnamdi Collins, Jens Grahl, Kauã Santos, and Jean-Mattéo Bahoya due to injury.
The match represents a direct clash between two sides separated by just three points in the tightly-contested upper-midtable of the Bundesliga. For Augsburg, a win would solidify their push for a historic top-half finish. For Frankfurt, securing three points is vital to keep pace in the congested race for European football next season, with only a handful of matches remaining in the campaign.
