FC Augsburg have announced the signing of Calvin Brackelmann from SC Paderborn on a free transfer. The centre-back has agreed to a contract with the Bundesliga club that will run until 2030.
The 26-year-old Brackelmann joins Augsburg after a two-year spell with Paderborn, where he made 63 appearances across all competitions. He was a key figure for the newly-promoted side, contributing to their successful campaign and subsequent return to the Bundesliga. Paderborn were promoted to the Bundesliga after finishing second in the 2. Bundesliga last season.
Augsburg sporting director Benni Weber expressed his satisfaction with the acquisition, stating that Brackelmann’s “pace, height and power provide us with additional options on the pitch and he’s a great fit for our overall philosophy at FCA.” The club have been looking to bolster their defensive options ahead of the new season, and Brackelmann’s arrival addresses that need.
Brackelmann himself stated he felt Augsburg was the “perfect fit” for him after initial meetings with club officials. He expressed his desire to “take the next step” in his career at FCA and is eager to integrate into the team quickly. He aims to contribute with “strong performances on the pitch” as Augsburg prepare for the upcoming Bundesliga campaign.
Augsburg finished 15th in the Bundesliga last season, narrowly avoiding relegation. Strengthening their defence will be crucial as they aim for a more comfortable mid-table finish in the 2024-25 season. Brackelmann’s arrival provides competition for places and adds depth to the squad, potentially improving their overall stability at the back.
