Augsburg's Finn Dahmen eyes World Cup spot after securing Bundesliga safety
Augsburg goalkeeper Finn Dahmen has reiterated his ambition to be part of Germany's squad for the upcoming World Cup, following his club's successful battle to avoid relegation. The 28-year-old, who has been included in Julian Nagelsmann's last four national team selections, made his comments after Augsburg secured their Bundesliga status with a 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt.
Dahmen, who joined Augsburg from Mainz in 2023, expressed his hope for international recognition while acknowledging the final decision rests with the national team coach. "Of course, I’m hoping to go to the World Cup," Dahmen said. "But, in the end the national team coach makes the decision. I feel good, I’m in good form and they know what I can offer." The Wiesbaden-born keeper has yet to make his senior debut for Germany despite his recent call-ups.
The draw with Frankfurt, Dahmen's childhood club, ensured Augsburg will play a 16th consecutive season in the top flight. The goalkeeper highlighted the achievement of the club's pre-winter break objectives, stating, "We’re happy to have secured survival. But, of course, we really wanted to win today. Before the winter break, we set ourselves certain goals and now we’ve achieved them." His consistent performances for the modest Bavarian side have been central to their defensive solidity throughout the campaign.
Dahmen's path to the national team setup is a notable one, having established himself as a reliable Bundesliga starter after several seasons as a backup at Mainz. His form this season has kept him in Nagelsmann's plans as the coach evaluates his options behind established number one Manuel Neuer. The competition for the backup goalkeeper roles remains intense, with several experienced players vying for selection.
With the World Cup squad announcement approaching, Dahmen's continued inclusion in training camps suggests he is under serious consideration. His immediate focus will now shift to ending the domestic season strongly with Augsburg and hoping his performances have done enough to earn a place on the plane. For Augsburg, retaining a goalkeeper of his caliber and ambition is a significant boost as they plan for another season of consolidation in the Bundesliga.
