Auxerre have completed the signing of goalkeeper Mamadou Diop from Grenoble, the Ligue 1 club announced on Monday. The 26-year-old has signed a four-year contract with the Burgundian side and will compete with Donovan Léon and Théo De Percin for the starting position. Financial details of the transfer were not disclosed.
Diop, who stands at 2.04m tall, was a highly sought-after goalkeeper in Ligue 1, with Brest among the clubs reportedly interested in his services. He has been a key player for Grenoble, helping them establish themselves as a competitive force in Ligue 2. This move represents Diop’s first opportunity to play in the French top flight.
“I feel proud because I am happy to join AJ Auxerre,” Diop stated on the club’s official website. “It’s a big step in my career. Signing for this historic club makes me very happy.” He is a seven-time international for Mauritania, adding experience to the Auxerre squad.
Diop is the fourth arrival at Auxerre this transfer window, following Arthur Piedfort from Westerlo, Danny Namaso from Porto in a permanent deal, and Romain Faivre who has rejoined on loan. Auxerre will be hoping Diop’s arrival strengthens their goalkeeping options as they look to consolidate their position in Ligue 1 after a challenging season. The signing indicates a proactive approach by Auxerre to reinforce their squad ahead of the upcoming campaign.
