Auxerre are on the verge of completing a deal to sign Arthur Piedfort from Belgian Jupiler Pro League side Westerlo, according to L’Équipe. Negotiations between Auxerre sporting director David Wantier and Westerlo have been ongoing for several days, with an agreement now appearing imminent.
Piedfort, a 21-year-old defensive midfielder, is expected to sign a four-year contract with the Ligue 1 club. The Belgian youth international has established himself as a key player for Westerlo, making 88 appearances across three seasons. He has reportedly attracted interest from several other European clubs, but Auxerre have moved quickly to secure his signature.
The transfer fee has not been disclosed by either club. Piedfort primarily operates as a holding midfielder, known for his physical presence and ability to break up play. Standing at 1.86m, he provides a strong aerial presence and is comfortable in possession. His arrival at Auxerre would provide manager Will Still with added steel and defensive solidity in midfield.
Auxerre narrowly avoided relegation from Ligue 1 last season, finishing 16th. Strengthening their midfield options is a priority for Still as he looks to build a more competitive squad. Piedfort’s age and experience in European football make him an attractive prospect for the club. The move represents a significant step up in his career, providing him with the opportunity to test himself in one of Europe’s top leagues.
The signing of Piedfort could allow Auxerre to further refine their midfield structure and potentially facilitate tactical flexibility under Still. His defensive capabilities will be particularly valuable as the club aims to improve its overall defensive record and climb the Ligue 1 table.
