Ivory Coast defender Éric Bailly has joined Major League Soccer side Columbus Crew from Real Oviedo, the club confirmed. The move brings Bailly to the United States after a season with the Spanish second-division side, where he made sixteen appearances. Financial details of the transfer were not disclosed.
Bailly’s contract with Columbus Crew runs through at least June 2027, with the club holding options for one-year extensions in both 2027-2028 and 2028-2029. These extensions are contingent on the player’s fitness, as Bailly has a history of injury concerns throughout his career. Currently tenth in the Eastern Conference, Columbus Crew will hope Bailly can solidify their defense as they push for a playoff spot.
The 30-year-old previously played for Manchester United, joining the club in 2016 from Villarreal for a reported €38 million. He won the UEFA Europa League with United in 2017, but his time at Old Trafford was hampered by injuries and inconsistent form. Following his departure from United, Bailly had a short spell with Beşiktaş before returning to Villarreal for the 2024-2025 season.
Bailly’s recent season with Real Oviedo ended in relegation, making a move to the MLS an attractive option for continued professional football. He will join a Columbus Crew side looking to build on their recent successes and compete for MLS Cup. The addition of an experienced international defender like Bailly provides a boost to the team's defensive capabilities and adds another dimension to their squad.
