Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba has reportedly held discussions with several Manchester United players regarding a potential transfer to Old Trafford. The 22-year-old has been a long-term target for United, with interest dating back to last summer when he was identified as a suitable profile for then-managerial candidate Ruben Amorim.
Manchester United have already secured the signing of Atalanta’s Ederson for a fee of €45 million, but are expected to add further reinforcements in midfield following Casemiro’s departure to Inter Miami. Manuel Ugarte is also reportedly available for transfer, potentially opening up space for additional signings. While other midfield targets such as Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, and Mateus Fernandes have been linked, Baleba remains on the club’s shortlist.
According to The Sun, Baleba spoke with Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha after Manchester United’s 3-0 victory over Brighton on the final day of last season. He reportedly sought out Cunha, an unused substitute in the match, for a lengthy conversation, with Cunha having previously played against Baleba during his time at Wolves. Further conversations took place with Patrick Dorgu on the same day.
Baleba also has existing connections within the United squad. He previously played alongside defender Leny Yoro at Lille, and shares a close relationship with Cameroonian international Bryan Mbeumo. Compatriot Andre Onana, before his move to Trabzonspor, reportedly encouraged Baleba to consider a move to United last year. Both Onana and Mbeumo are expected to return for pre-season training with Manchester United next month, though reports suggest the club intend to sell Onana this summer.
Should Baleba complete a move to Manchester United, he would add further depth to a midfield undergoing significant change. The arrival of Ederson and potential further signings signal a clear intent to rebuild the central area of the pitch under manager Michael Carrick. This could provide competition for places and a more dynamic midfield setup.
