United States forward Folarin Balogun will be available for his nation’s round of sixteen match against Belgium, despite receiving a red card in the previous game against Bosnia-Herzegovina. According to reports from FIFA’s disciplinary committee, Balogun has been given a one-match suspension, but it has been suspended for a probationary period of one year.
The decision, described as surprising, stems from Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, which allows the committee to convert suspensions into a probationary period. The statement released by FIFA reads: “In accordance with Article 27 of the FDF Disciplinary Code, the automatic suspension of United States player Folarin Balogun is suspended for a probationary period of one year.”
This news will be a significant boost for United States manager Mauricio Pochettino, who had expressed frustration over the initial suspension. The ruling raises questions about consistency in disciplinary actions during the tournament, with some observers suggesting other players should be granted the same leniency.
Balogun, 22, joined Monaco from Arsenal in the summer of 2023 for a reported fee of €40 million. He has quickly become an important player for the Ligue 1 side, showcasing his goal-scoring ability and physical presence. Prior to his move to Monaco, the American forward spent time on loan at Reims and Middlesbrough, gaining valuable experience in European football. He has represented the United States at various youth levels before earning his first senior cap in 2023.
The suspended suspension allows the United States to field their strongest possible lineup against Belgium. This is a crucial match for the Americans as they aim to progress further in the tournament. The decision by FIFA is likely to be a talking point throughout the remainder of the competition, particularly if similar incidents occur and are treated differently.
