FC Barcelona have reached an agreement with Newcastle United for the transfer of forward Anthony Gordon, according to The Athletic. The deal is reported to be worth €80 million plus bonuses, with personal terms also agreed with the 25-year-old England international. The move has been driven by Barcelona’s new head coach, Hansi Flick, and sporting director Deco, who are both understood to be strong admirers of Gordon’s playing style.
Barcelona view Gordon as a player capable of filling the role currently occupied by loanee Marcus Rashford – a winger who can provide pace, direct running, and a high-intensity pressing game. Rashford is currently on loan from Manchester United, with a €30 million option to buy that is set to expire on June 15th. However, the club are unlikely to trigger that clause due to the player’s high salary.
While Gordon’s transfer fee is higher than Rashford’s option to buy, Barcelona believe they can offset the cost through a lower wage structure and a longer contract duration. A further loan spell for Rashford has not been ruled out, despite the impending arrival of Gordon. This suggests Barcelona are seeking a long-term solution in the wide forward position, but remain open to retaining Rashford’s services under revised financial terms.
Gordon enjoyed a productive season with Newcastle, scoring 17 goals and providing 5 assists in 46 appearances across all competitions. He also impressed in the Champions League, netting 10 goals in 12 matches. Both Gordon and Rashford are currently included in Thomas Tuchel’s preliminary squad for the 2026 World Cup, highlighting their international credentials. The acquisition of Gordon strengthens Barcelona’s attacking options and provides Flick with a versatile player capable of contributing in multiple phases of play. This transfer signals Barcelona’s intent to compete at the highest level following a season of transition.
