Chelsea forward Joao Pedro has been recommended to Barcelona as a superior transfer option to Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez, according to former Blaugrana striker Bojan Krkic. The recommendation, reported by Spanish outlet Cadena SER, places the 24-year-old Brazilian at the centre of fresh speculation as Barcelona seek a long-term successor to veteran striker Robert Lewandowski.
Krkic, who came through Barcelona's famed La Masia academy, stated that Pedro would be his preferred choice for the Catalan club's system. "I would bet on Joao Pedro rather than Julian, I like him more," Krkic said. "[Pedro] finishes, he plays well, he is very complete. He is similar to Julian but he is more of a goal scorer and a better player." This public endorsement from a former player adds a new dimension to Barcelona's striker search, which had previously been heavily focused on Alvarez.
Joao Pedro arrived at Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer of 2025 for a fee reported to be in excess of £70 million. His debut season at Stamford Bridge has been impressive, with the forward contributing 18 goals and 7 assists across all competitions, establishing himself as a key figure in the attack. His form has kept him in contention for the Brazil national team, adding to his market value and profile.
The situation places Chelsea in a potentially delicate position. The club has not indicated any desire to sell one of its most productive players, and there is no suggestion an offer has been made. However, the public courting from a figure associated with Barcelona could test the resolve of both player and club, particularly if the Spanish giants formalise their interest with a substantial bid. Chelsea's own managerial situation remains unresolved following the interim tenure of Liam Rosenior, with Fulham's Marco Silva reportedly a target, though his potential appointment is complicated by interest from Benfica.
For Barcelona, the pursuit of a new centre-forward is a clear priority, with Lewandowski now 37. Alvarez, 27, has been the most consistently linked name, but Krkic's comments suggest alternative thinking within the club's circles. Pedro's style, which blends technical ability with a direct goal threat, is seen as a potentially better fit for Barcelona's traditional playing philosophy. Any move, however, would require significant financial outlay, with Pedro's Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) listed at approximately €71.3 million.
Elsewhere at Chelsea, the future of other attacking assets remains in flux. Nicolas Jackson, currently on loan at Bayern Munich, is reportedly valued at €70 million by the club, though the German champions have declined their purchase option. Meanwhile, the agent of midfielder Enzo Fernandez has moved to quash rumours of a potential move to Real Madrid, insisting the Argentine is focused on his commitments at Stamford Bridge. The potential arrival of a new permanent manager will be the next step in shaping Chelsea's squad ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
