Barcelona have agreed to an improved contract with midfielder Dani Olmo, according to reports from MD. The agreement sees Olmo’s wages increased after he initially accepted a lower salary to facilitate his transfer to the club and ease Barcelona’s financial constraints.
Olmo rejoined Barcelona from RB Leipzig in 2024 for a fee of €55 million, following a prior unsuccessful attempt to sign Nico Williams. His registration initially relied on an emergency injury rule, later requiring a court order to ensure his continued eligibility after that rule expired. The Spain international signed a contract through 2030, but a clause stipulated a wage increase after two seasons to compensate for his initial financial contribution.
Olmo’s return to his boyhood club has been hampered by minor injuries and inconsistent form during his first two seasons. Despite a strong finish to the recent campaign, his position as a regular starter has been challenged by the emergence of Fermin Lopez. The arrival of Anthony Gordon further complicates the situation, potentially leading to experimentation with Raphinha on the left wing, a tactic previously employed by manager Hansi Flick.
Flick has consistently expressed his admiration for Olmo, suggesting the player remains a key part of his plans. However, Olmo will face competition for playing time in a crowded midfield. The improved contract reflects Barcelona’s appreciation for Olmo’s commitment and willingness to work within the club’s financial limitations, securing a valuable asset for the foreseeable future. This move allows Barcelona to retain a talented player while navigating ongoing financial challenges.
Barcelona are also reportedly considering activating a bargain buy-back clause for Jan Virgili from Mallorca, with his release clause reduced due to Mallorca’s relegation to Segunda División.
