Barcelona decide against signing Rashford permanently
Barcelona have decided not to exercise their option to sign Marcus Rashford on a permanent deal, according to a report from Sport. The England international will return to Manchester United this summer after a season-long loan with the Catalan club, who have opted against triggering a €30 million purchase clause in his contract.
Rashford moved to Barcelona last summer after falling out of favour under then-Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim. He made a strong initial impact, scoring 10 goals before the January break, but his form has since dipped, with only two more goals added since. His recent performances, particularly across three crucial matches against Atletico Madrid, are understood to have influenced the club's decision. Manager Hansi Flick dropped Rashford for the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Atletico, a move seen as a significant indicator of his diminished standing.
The primary reason for Barcelona's U-turn, however, is financial. Despite the relatively low transfer fee, the club's stringent Financial Fair Play constraints make Rashford's significant wages difficult to justify. Sport reports that Barcelona have chosen to prioritise funds for other positions, specifically a left-footed centre-back and a centre-forward, leading them to walk away from a previously discussed long-term deal for the winger.
Rashford's return to Manchester United coincides with a period of change at Old Trafford. Amorim has since departed, and interim manager Michael Carrick, who is favoured to take the role permanently, has indicated a willingness to reintegrate the academy graduate. "There's decisions to be made on certain things, and obviously Marcus is in that situation," Carrick said recently. "But at this point in time, nothing's been decided... Whoever's here, I want to work with, and help them improve."
Despite this openness, Manchester United are reportedly willing to sell Rashford if a suitable offer arrives, and they are now likely to seek a fee higher than the €30 million Barcelona would have paid. His future, however, remains uncertain until a permanent manager is appointed. Interest from other clubs is expected, with Sport noting that Tottenham Hotspur hold a strong interest, though any potential move would be contingent on Spurs retaining their Premier League status, which is currently under threat.
The decision marks a swift end to Rashford's Barcelona chapter after a promising start, leaving the 28-year-old at a career crossroads as he prepares to return to a club in transition.
