Barcelona Extend Lead as Yamal Shines in Derbi Barceloní Victory
Barcelona have taken a commanding nine-point lead at the top of La Liga after a commanding 4-1 victory over city rivals Espanyol in the Catalan derby. The win, which comes after Real Madrid's 1-1 draw with Girona, gives Xavi Hernández's side a significant and potentially decisive advantage in the title race. The victory was orchestrated by the exceptional 15-year-old winger Lamine Yamal, who was instrumental in the first two goals.
The match at the Spotify Camp Nou was effectively settled in the first half, with Barcelona's early dominance paying off in the 9th minute. Yamal, starting in a La Liga match for the first time, delivered a perfect cross for Ferran Torres to head home the opener. The 15-year-old was the architect again just 16 minutes later, his precise low cross from the right again finding Torres, who finished from close range to double the lead.
Yamal thought he had capped a dream full debut with a goal of his own in the 54th minute, but his fine strike was ruled out by VAR for offside in the build-up. Espanyol, to their credit, responded instantly, with Javi Puado racing clear to pull a goal back just two minutes later, setting up a tense finale. Barcelona, however, showed their championship mettle in the final moments. Yamal, the clear man of the match, capped a stunning individual performance by cutting inside and finishing coolly in the 87th minute. Substitute Marcus Rashford, on loan from Manchester United, then added a final flourish in the 89th minute, tapping in from close range after good work from Ousmane Dembélé.
The result leaves Barcelona with a commanding nine-point lead over second-placed Real Madrid, who could only manage a home draw with Girona earlier in the day. The size of the gap, with just a handful of games remaining, puts the Blaugrana in a commanding position to secure their first league title since 2019. For Espanyol, the defeat leaves them mired in a tense relegation battle, just two points above the bottom three. The performance of Lamine Yamal, who became the youngest player to provide two assists in a La Liga match this century, will be the major talking point, suggesting a new star has truly arrived at the Camp Nou.
