Barcelona hold talks over Real Sociedad defender Jon Martin
Barcelona have held preliminary talks with the agent of Real Sociedad defender Jon Martin as they explore alternatives to their primary centre-back target, Alessandro Bastoni. According to a report from Sport, sporting director Deco met informally with the 20-year-old's representative this week to discuss the framework of a potential move. Martin, a left-footed central defender, has a release clause in his contract set at €50 million.
Barcelona's search for a new left-sided centre-back is a priority this summer, with the club seeking to address defensive issues that have persisted since the departure of Inigo Martinez in 2025. While Inter Milan's Bastoni remains the preferred candidate, the club's pursuit is still pending final approval from head coach Hansi Flick. This has prompted Deco to survey the market for other viable options who fit the desired profile.
Jon Martin has emerged as a credible alternative after a breakout season with Real Sociedad, where he played a significant role in their recent Copa del Rey triumph. His performances in La Liga have attracted attention from several top European clubs, with Real Madrid also previously noted to have monitored his situation. The €50 million clause, which aligns with Barcelona's estimated budget for Bastoni, presents a straightforward, if expensive, path to a deal, although Real Sociedad are reportedly reluctant to sell.
The Catalans' interest underscores a strategic shift towards securing a long-term defensive solution. Martin's age and proven adaptability to Spanish football make him an attractive prospect, though Barcelona's immediate focus is understood to remain on finalising a move for Bastoni. Should negotiations with Inter stall, the club may accelerate their plans for Martin, setting the stage for a potential bidding war given the widespread interest in the young defender.
