Barcelona are reportedly interested in signing 19-year-old defender Jorge Salinas from Racing Santander, according to reports from Arco FM and Diario Montanes. The Catalan club have been linked with a move for the versatile player for a second time this year, as they look to bolster their defensive options ahead of next season.
Barcelona initially pursued Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni, but that deal reportedly collapsed due to uncertainty surrounding the plans of new manager Hansi Flick. This has prompted the club to explore alternative targets, with several defensive positions appearing uncertain for the upcoming campaign. Salinas emerges as a potential solution, offering flexibility across the backline.
Salinas currently has a contract with Racing Santander until 2029, but his release clause is set at approximately €10 million. The defender’s agent, Jorge Mendes, has a well-established relationship with Barcelona, which could potentially smooth negotiations. Barcelona were reportedly impressed by Salinas during their Copa del Rey clash with Racing, despite the player not featuring in the match itself.
This season, Salinas has made 33 appearances for Racing, primarily at left-back, contributing seven assists as the club secured promotion back to La Liga. He has also represented Spain at the under-19 level, earning five caps and scoring twice while playing as a centre-back. Salinas is set to be included in Spain’s squad for the upcoming under-19 European Championships. His ability to play multiple positions makes him an attractive prospect for Barcelona, who are seeking defensive reinforcements. Other clubs are also likely to monitor his situation, given his promising performances and relatively low release clause.
Securing Salinas would provide Barcelona with a young and adaptable defender capable of competing for a place in the first team. The move aligns with the club’s strategy of identifying and developing promising talent from across Europe.
