Barcelona are set to re-sign winger Jan Virgili from Mallorca for a fee of €7 million, according to Sport. The move is facilitated by a reduced release clause in Virgili’s contract following Mallorca’s relegation from La Liga.
Barcelona sold Virgili to Mallorca last summer for approximately €3.5 million, retaining a 40% sell-on clause. The original release clause was set at €30 million, allowing Barcelona to bring him back for €18 million. However, that figure has now dropped to €12 million due to Mallorca’s demotion. Barcelona can secure his return for a further reduced fee of €7 million, a clause exclusive to the Catalan club.
Real Betis have expressed interest in Virgili following Mallorca’s relegation, viewing the €12 million release clause as attractive. However, Barcelona’s unique position allows them to effectively outbid any other suitor by €5 million. The club’s sporting director, Deco, has been actively seeking options to strengthen the left wing position ahead of the summer transfer window.
Virgili enjoyed a promising first season in La Liga with Mallorca, registering two goals and four assists in 31 appearances, including 19 starts. His dynamic and explosive style of play has caught the attention of several clubs, but Barcelona believe he represents a valuable, cost-effective backup to Raphinha. The club are reportedly keen on securing a younger alternative to the Brazilian international.
Even if Barcelona decide not to integrate Virgili into Hansi Flick’s first-team plans, the club believes they could quickly resell him for a profit, potentially exceeding €10 million. This strategy would also allow Barcelona to retain control over the player’s future through additional clauses in any potential resale agreement. The move offers Barcelona a low-risk opportunity to strengthen their squad depth and potentially capitalize on a future transfer.
