Barcelona edge Espanyol in derby to tighten grip on La Liga
Barcelona have moved a step closer to the La Liga title after a hard-fought 4-1 victory over local rivals Espanyol at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys. The win, inspired by a Ferran Torres brace, extends their lead at the top of the table after Real Madrid dropped points earlier in the weekend.
Ferran Torres was the standout player, ending a 16-game goal drought in all competitions with a first-half double. The 27-year-old opened the scoring in the 9th minute, latching onto a precise cross from Lamine Yamal to give Barcelona an early lead. He doubled his and Barcelona's tally just 16 minutes later, finishing a sublime Yamal pass to make it 2-0. This brace marked a significant return to scoring form for Torres, who had not found the net in La Liga since January.
Espanyol, however, refused to capitulate. After a potential third Barcelona goal was disallowed for offside, the visitors struck back. Pol Lozano's stunning 56th-minute strike from outside the box halved the deficit and set up a tense finale at the Olympic Stadium. Espanyol continued to press, with Fernando Calero missing a clear chance to equalize in the 72nd minute.
Barcelona's victory was sealed in the final minutes by their substitutes. The 16-year-old Lamine Yamal, who provided two assists, capped a fine individual performance by scoring a deflected effort in the 87th minute to make it 3-1. Just two minutes later, substitute Marcus Rashford, on loan from Manchester United, scored his first goal for the club to complete the 4-1 scoreline, tapping in a cross from Frenkie de Jong, who had also entered the match as a late substitute.
The win, orchestrated by manager Hansi Flick, sees Barcelona take full advantage of Real Madrid's 1-1 draw with Girona, moving them closer to the La Liga title. The result piles pressure on their rivals and demonstrates a significant improvement in Barcelona's form and depth, with impactful contributions from the bench proving decisive. The three points are a significant boost for Barcelona's title aspirations as they seek to secure the championship in the final stretch of the season.
