Barcelona are exploring the possibility of selling defender Jules Kounde this summer, with intermediaries contacting clubs across Europe to assess potential interest, according to TEAMtalk. The 26-year-old endured an inconsistent season under former manager Hansi Flick, and while still valued by the Catalan club, Barcelona are evaluating options ahead of the transfer window.
Chelsea have emerged as potential suitors, having previously been long-term admirers of Kounde, despite recently signing Marco Palestra at right-back. Liverpool are also reported to have been informed of the player’s availability, appreciating his versatility as he can feature at both right-back and centre-back. Arsenal and Manchester City are also assessing their options at right-back and have included Kounde in their discussions.
Manchester United have been contacted regarding Kounde, however, their focus remains on strengthening the left-back position. Bayern Munich have also been alerted to the situation and are considering a move for a right-sided defender. Any potential deal is complicated by financial factors, with Barcelona seeking in excess of £50 million for the player.
Kounde’s salary, reportedly exceeding £200,000 per week, presents a further hurdle for interested clubs, requiring a substantial financial commitment. This combination of transfer fee and wages is expected to limit the number of realistic contenders. Sources indicate that Barcelona currently view the sale of Ronald Araujo as more likely than Kounde’s departure, as the Uruguayan would represent a cheaper overall investment.
Barcelona’s immediate priority is to gauge the level of interest in Kounde before deciding whether to actively pursue a sale. Kounde joined Barcelona from Sevilla in July 2022 for a reported fee of around €55 million, and has made 85 appearances for the club across all competitions. His ability to play multiple positions makes him an attractive option for several top European clubs.
