Barcelona have informed Manchester United they will not be exercising their option to purchase Marcus Rashford outright for €30 million, according to reports from Fabrizio Romano and Marca. The England international spent the latter half of the season on loan at the Camp Nou, with personal terms for a three-year contract on reduced wages already agreed.
Marca cited two primary reasons for Barcelona’s decision: Anthony Gordon’s superior defensive work rate, which aligns with manager Hansi Flick’s emphasis on high pressing, and Rashford’s age, being three and a half years older than Gordon. The club evidently views Gordon as a more suitable long-term option.
Matteo Moretto echoed this sentiment, stating Rashford is no longer a priority for the Catalan side, though a return to negotiations isn’t entirely off the table should circumstances change. However, any potential renewed interest would depend on Rashford’s availability and other offers he receives.
Adding a new dimension to the situation, both Christian Falk and The Sun report that Bayern Munich are prepared to offer Manchester United €40 million for Rashford – a substantial £8.5 million increase on Barcelona’s option. This higher offer presents a more lucrative outcome for United, and Rashford may be more open to a move given Barcelona’s apparent lack of conviction.
Bayern are actively seeking a new left winger, having already been unsuccessful in attempts to sign Anthony Gordon and Rio Ngumoha. Rashford could fill this void, potentially bolstering their attack ahead of the upcoming season. The situation leaves Rashford’s future uncertain, but with Barcelona out of the picture, a move to the Bundesliga now appears a distinct possibility.
