Valentín Barco has officially confirmed his transfer from Strasbourg to Chelsea this summer, becoming the fifth signing for the BlueCo-owned club during the current window. The Argentina international has been a key player for Strasbourg since joining in 2025, and his departure was widely anticipated following reports of Chelsea’s interest.
Barco made 43 appearances for Strasbourg this season, contributing three goals and nine assists. Reports in March indicated Chelsea were “very close” to securing his signature, and a deal was reportedly agreed in April. Transfer reporter Ben Jacobs has now confirmed that Chelsea will publicly announce the transfer following the conclusion of the current season.
Following Strasbourg’s 5-4 victory over AS Monaco on Sunday, Barco bid farewell to the club’s supporters. He later released a statement on Instagram expressing his gratitude to the club, teammates, and fans. Barco specifically thanked Liam Rosenior and Gary O’Neil, the managers he played under at Strasbourg, for their guidance and support in his development as a player.
Barco initially joined Strasbourg from Brighton & Hove Albion as a left-back, but was successfully converted into a central midfielder by Rosenior. Standing at 5’7”, he is expected to continue in the midfield role at Chelsea, although his versatility could see him deployed as a left wing-back by new manager Xabi Alonso. The agreement to sign Barco was finalised prior to Alonso’s appointment, leaving some uncertainty as to how he will feature in the Spaniard’s plans.
The transfer represents a significant move for Barco, offering him the opportunity to compete in the Premier League with a club undergoing a period of restructuring under new ownership and management. For Chelsea, the acquisition further strengthens their squad depth and adds another promising talent to their ranks. The move also highlights the growing synergy between Chelsea and Strasbourg within the BlueCo group.
