Valentín Barco has left Strasbourg after just a season and a half with the club, despite signing a contract with the Alsatian side that ran until 2029. The move comes as a surprise given the length of his deal, but Strasbourg are expected to receive a significant fee for the Argentinian winger. According to reports, a transfer to Chelsea, the parent club of BlueCo who own Strasbourg, is a distinct possibility.
Barco arrived at Strasbourg from Boca Juniors, with previous spells at Sevilla and Brighton & Hove Albion. He quickly became a fan favourite in Ligue 1, showcasing his talent and distinctive style with his tattoos and left foot. This season, the 21-year-old was nominated for the UNFP Young Player of the Year award, highlighting his impact on the league.
In a post on Instagram, Barco expressed his gratitude to the club and the fans, stating that Strasbourg would always hold a special place in his heart, particularly due to the birth of his daughter during his time there. He added that he would continue to support the club from a distance and hopes to return with his family in the future. His departure leaves Bradley Barcola as the only remaining ‘Barco’ in Ligue 1, a playful nod to their shared surname.
Strasbourg recently secured a victory over Brest, but the win is somewhat overshadowed by Barco’s imminent exit. The financial windfall from his sale will undoubtedly be welcomed by the club, allowing them to reinvest in the squad for the upcoming season. While the destination remains unconfirmed, a move to Chelsea would see Barco join a Premier League club with significant ambition, potentially offering him a platform to further develop his career.
