Bayern Munich complete signing of Freiburg defender Kiliann Sildillia
Bayern Munich have signed defender Kiliann Sildillia from SC Freiburg on a permanent deal, both clubs confirmed on Monday. The 22-year-old French right-back has signed a contract with the German champions until 2029, with the transfer fee reported by Sky Germany to be in the region of €20 million.
Sildillia, who joined Freiburg's academy in 2020, developed into a key first-team player at the Europa-Park Stadion, making over 80 senior appearances. His consistent performances in the Bundesliga, noted for defensive solidity and attacking support, attracted the attention of several top clubs before Bayern moved decisively to secure his signature.
The transfer concludes a rapid rise for the Paris-born defender, who also made his debut for the France Under-21 side last year. His departure comes just days after Freiburg's dramatic 3-2 loss to Bayern in a Bundesliga match, a game decided by two late goals from the visitors in stoppage time.
For Bayern, the acquisition addresses a clear need for depth and long-term planning in the full-back positions. With veteran captain Joshua Kimmich often deployed in midfield and Noussair Mazraoui facing intermittent fitness issues, Sildillia provides a youthful, athletic option who is already well-acclimatised to the demands of the Bundesliga. Bayern's sporting director, Christoph Freund, described Sildillia as a "modern, physically strong defender with great potential for development."
From Freiburg's perspective, the substantial fee represents significant income for a player developed in-house, following their established model of nurturing and selling talent. The club is expected to reinvest the funds into their squad as they aim to maintain their consistent top-half finishes in the league. Sildillia's move continues a recent trend of players transitioning directly from Freiburg to Bayern, following the path of midfielder Nicolas Höfler earlier in his career.
The immediate implication is that Sildillia will compete for a starting role immediately under Bayern's incoming coach, with pre-season training set to begin in July. His familiarity with the league should aid a swift integration, as Bayern look to reclaim the Bundesliga title after a rare season without silverware.
