Bayern Munich Set New Bundesliga Goals Record in Rout of St. Pauli
Bayern Munich have set a new Bundesliga record for goals in a single season, surpassing their own 53-year-old record during a 5-0 victory over FC St. Pauli. The victory, which featured goals from Jamal Musiala, Leon Goretzka, Michael Olise, Nicolas Jackson, and Raphaël Guerreiro, saw the reigning champions surpass their own 101-goal season record set in the 1971-72 campaign.
The record-breaking goal came in the 9th minute at the Millerntor-Stadion, as Jamal Musiala headed home to open the scoring and bring Bayern's season tally to 102, one clear of the record set by the legendary Gerd Müller-led side. The Bavarians, who now have 105 goals with five league games remaining, extended their lead at the Bundesliga summit to eight points, moving closer to a 13th consecutive league title. Leon Goretzka doubled the lead early in the second half, finishing off a fine team move, before Michael Olise added a third just two minutes later. A deflected strike from substitute Nicolas Jackson and a late tap-in from Raphaël Guerreiro completed the rout.
According to Sky Germany, the emphatic win and the breaking of the 50-year-old record was a key objective for the club hierarchy this season. The previous record of 101 goals, set by a Bayern side featuring legends like Gerd Müller, Franz Beckenbauer, and Paul Breitner, had stood as a Bundesliga benchmark for over five decades. The current squad, under manager Vincent Kompany, has achieved the feat with five games to spare, with the potential to set a new, even higher benchmark. The victory also sees Bayern extend their lead at the top of the table, putting them on the cusp of another league title.
For the hosts, FC St. Pauli, the result is a setback in their push for a European spot. The Kiezkicker, who started the day in 8th, were outclassed by a Bayern side that has found a ruthless edge in front of goal. The record-breaking goal came from a familiar source, as Jamal Musiala rose highest to meet a cross from the right flank, giving goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj no chance. The goal, which sparked muted celebrations from the away side, was the 102nd of Bayern's season, officially breaking the 101-goal record.
The result and the new record will be seen as a significant milestone for Kompany’s first season in charge, as his team continues to dominate domestically. The focus now shifts to the Champions League, with the club's hierarchy likely viewing this attacking milestone as a sign of the team's potent firepower ahead of the European quarter-finals. The Bavarian giants will look to add to their record goal tally when they host VfB Stuttgart next weekend.
