Bayern Munich are preparing an initial bid of €25m (£21m) for Manchester United winger Marcus Rashford, according to reports, after Liverpool refused to sell Rio Ngumoha to the Bundesliga champions. The move comes as Barcelona have decided against activating their option to purchase Rashford outright for €30m (£26m), an option which expired this week.
United are keen to sell Rashford permanently and remove his £325,000-a-week wages from the club’s payroll. While Arsenal have been linked with a potential swap deal involving Gabriel Martinelli, Bayern Munich currently represent the most viable option for an immediate sale. The German side were previously interested in both Anthony Gordon, who joined Barcelona for £69m, and Liverpool’s Ngumoha, but both moves were unsuccessful.
Liverpool’s decision to retain Ngumoha has seemingly prompted Bayern to turn their attention to Rashford as they seek competition for Luis Diaz on the left wing. Sources indicate that United are holding out for the €30m Barcelona were willing to pay, and Bayern may need to increase their offer to secure the 28-year-old.
Rashford endured a mixed 2023-24 season, scoring seven Premier League goals despite ongoing speculation about his future. He has been with Manchester United since 2005, progressing through the club’s academy, and has made over 300 appearances for the first team. A sale would allow United to further reshape their attack under Erik ten Hag, though securing their asking price remains a priority. Should Bayern increase their bid, Rashford’s departure could be expedited, bringing an end to his long association with the club.
