Former Germany international Dietmar Hamann has urged Bayern Munich to pursue a move for Marcus Rashford this summer instead of their primary target, Newcastle United's Anthony Gordon. According to an interview with BetKing, Hamann believes the Manchester United forward, currently on loan at Barcelona, represents a superior and more cost-effective option for the Bundesliga giants. Rashford's future remains uncertain, with Barcelona reportedly hesitant to activate a permanent option due to financial constraints.
Bayern Munich have been widely linked with a move for Gordon as they seek to reinforce their wide attacking options ahead of the new season. The England international is expected to be available should Newcastle United fail to qualify for European competition, with reports suggesting a fee in excess of £70 million would be required. In contrast, Rashford's loan agreement with Barcelona includes a reported buy option set at approximately £26 million, a figure that could make him a significantly cheaper alternative in the market.
Hamann, who played for Liverpool and Bayern Munich during his career, was emphatic in his assessment. "Should Bayern go in for Marcus Rashford? 100%," he said. "I love the player. I think he's a brilliant player." He praised Rashford's technique, shooting ability, and versatility, suggesting the 28-year-old could reignite his career with a move away from Old Trafford after a challenging period. "With Bayern Munich, I would have much preferred him, my choice, ahead of Anthony Gordon," Hamann added, citing Gordon's likely desire for regular starting minutes as a potential issue.
Despite this public endorsement, reports indicate that Bayern Munich's current plans do not involve switching their focus from Gordon to Rashford. The Bavarian club's hierarchy are said to remain committed to their initial target. Rashford's own preference, according to previous reports, is to secure a permanent move to Barcelona, where he has been on loan since the start of the 2025-26 season. However, the Catalan club's well-documented financial difficulties cast significant doubt on their ability to complete that deal.
The situation leaves Rashford's long-term future unresolved. Having risen through the academy at Manchester United, he has made over 350 appearances for the club, but his form has fluctuated in recent seasons, leading to the loan move to Spain. A potential failure to secure a move to Barcelona could see him become available to other suitors, with Bayern Munich now publicly touted as a logical destination. For Bayern, the decision will hinge on whether they value Gordon's current form and Premier League pedigree over Rashford's potential bargain fee and proven experience at the highest level.
