Bayern's Eberl dismisses Kompany speculation, relaxed over own future
Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl has publicly dismissed speculation linking head coach Vincent Kompany with a move away from the club, insisting the Belgian is part of an "elite group of coaches." Speaking to TZ München, Eberl laughed off reported interest from other European clubs in Kompany, who only joined Bayern from Burnley last summer on a contract running until 2029.
Eberl emphasized Kompany's growing stature, describing the 39-year-old as a "very clever, intelligent person" whose self-assured approach commands increasing respect daily. The public backing comes amid a period of transition at the Allianz Arena, with Kompany tasked with rebuilding the squad after a trophyless 2023-24 season. His appointment followed a lengthy search after the departures of Thomas Tuchel and several other candidates, making stability a key priority for the club's hierarchy.
The director's comments also extended to his own situation at the record German champions. Eberl, who joined from RB Leipzig in early 2024, has a contract that runs until June 2027. He stated he is "calm" about his future, having learned to focus on his performance rather than external noise. "I learned how things work at Bayern," Eberl said. "If I do my job well, the people I frequently discuss and talk to will also make their decisions." He added that he now focuses on his work and lets the club's decision-makers judge his contributions.
Kompany's first season in Bavaria is seen as a foundational one, with the club supporting him in a significant squad overhaul. The vote of confidence from Eberl is a clear attempt to quell any early rumors of unrest and project a unified front ahead of the new Bundesliga campaign. For Eberl personally, his relaxed stance marks a shift from his earlier career, admitting such speculation once made him "very nervous." His current approach suggests a desire for a period of calm, strategic planning at the Säbener Strasse headquarters.
The immediate implication is that Bayern Munich intends to build a long-term project under Kompany, with Eberl as a key architect, despite the intense scrutiny that follows the club. The dismissal of external interest aims to allow the coach to work without distraction as he prepares for his first full season in charge.
