Sebastián Beccacece has resigned as manager of the Ecuador national team following their elimination from the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Mexico, according to reports from Ecuadorian media outlet El Universo.
Beccacece took charge of Ecuador in August 2024 and was unable to guide the team beyond the round of sixteen in the current qualifying stage. Despite failing to reach the tournament’s later rounds, Beccacece expressed gratitude for his time with the squad, stating he and his team “gave everything.” He indicated a desire to continue but acknowledged that in football, results are paramount.
Known for his distinctive appearance – long blond hair and a tattoo of Marcelo Bielsa on his back – Beccacece had generated a positive impression during his tenure, particularly after a celebrated victory against Germany. The Argentine manager’s departure leaves questions surrounding the future of key players such as Willian Pacho, Piero Hincapié, and Moisés Caicedo, and who will lead them in future competitions.
Beccacece’s exit opens up a vacancy for a new manager to take the helm of the Ecuadorian national team. The search for a replacement will likely focus on a candidate capable of unlocking the potential within the current squad and progressing further in international tournaments. The timing of the departure allows the federation ample opportunity to identify and appoint a successor before the next set of qualifying matches.
