Benfica have secured the permanent signing of Jakub Kaminski from 1. FC Köln, the German club confirmed on their official website this evening. The Portuguese side have agreed to a transfer fee of €20million for the Polish international, who has signed a contract with Benfica that will run until 2031. The deal represents a significant profit for Köln, who only made Kaminski’s transfer from VfL Wolfsburg permanent last summer.
Kaminski’s move to Lisbon was triggered by a release clause in his contract with the Bundesliga side. Köln initially took the midfielder on loan from Wolfsburg for the 2022-23 season before exercising their option to buy for a reported €5.5million. The quick turnaround has proven financially beneficial for the Cathedral City club, demonstrating astute business in the transfer market.
The 24-year-old enjoyed a productive season with Köln, establishing himself as a key player under coach Steffen Baumgart. He scored seven goals and provided five assists in the recent Bundesliga campaign, showcasing his versatility and attacking threat from midfield. Kaminski has also become a regular feature for the Poland national team, earning 31 caps for his country.
Benfica are bolstering their attacking options ahead of a challenging season where they will aim to retain their Portuguese Primeira Liga title and make a significant impact in the Champions League. The addition of Kaminski provides coach Roger Schmidt with another dynamic and creative player capable of contributing goals and assists. The transfer signifies Benfica’s continued investment in young talent and their ambition to compete at the highest level of European football.
