Benfica are preparing an initial €25 million bid for Bayern Munich midfielder João Palhinha, according to reports from Portugal. The offer, as detailed by Record and DAZN Portugal, consists of a €20 million upfront payment alongside a further €5 million in potential bonuses.
This potential move represents a possible return to Portugal for Palhinha, who has spent the last season on loan in the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur. Despite a productive campaign in North London, Tottenham chose not to exercise their €30 million option to make the transfer permanent. The 29-year-old established himself as a key player for Ange Postecoglou’s side, featuring prominently in midfield and earning praise for his defensive contributions.
DAZN Portugal also reports that Benfica have proposed an alternative deal structure, suggesting a loan arrangement with a €10 million loan fee and a mandatory purchase clause set at €15 million. This provides Benfica with greater financial flexibility, should they wish to structure the deal differently.
Palhinha initially joined Bayern Munich from Sporting CP in 2023, but has struggled for consistent playing time in Germany. He made only 13 Bundesliga appearances for the Bavarian giants, largely as a substitute. A return to a league where he is already familiar and highly regarded could offer Palhinha the opportunity to rediscover his best form.
Sporting CP have also been linked with a move for the Portuguese international, but Record reports that their interest has waned due to Palhinha’s salary expectations. Benfica now appear to be the frontrunners for his signature, offering a clear pathway back to regular first-team football. The addition of Palhinha would significantly strengthen Benfica’s midfield options ahead of the new season, providing a robust defensive presence and experienced leadership.
