Lucas Bergvall is seeking a transfer away from Tottenham Hotspur this summer after a challenging second season with the club, according to reports from Italy. The 20-year-old Swedish international joined Spurs in the summer of 2024 for a fee of €20 million from Djurgårdens, having previously turned down an offer from Barcelona.
Bergvall enjoyed a successful initial period in North London, playing a key role in Tottenham’s Europa League triumph in May 2025 – their first trophy in 17 years. However, his form dipped under subsequent managers Igor Tudor and Roberto De Zerbi, leading to limited playing time. He has made just 112 minutes of appearances under De Zerbi, and the club’s intention to prioritize Sandro Tonali in midfield has reportedly prompted Bergvall to request a move.
Bergvall made his debut for Sweden in January 2024 while still a minor, and recently became the youngest ever Swedish player to appear in a World Cup, featuring against Tunisia and providing an assist. He previously had a trial with Juventus as a youth player and maintains a good relationship with current Spurs teammate Dejan Kulusevski.
Tottenham are expected to demand a fee of at least €45 million for Bergvall, who is described as a technically gifted, modern midfielder with qualities reminiscent of Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong. Several top European clubs are monitoring the situation, including Bayern Munich, Arsenal, and Liverpool, though Bayern are currently considered the frontrunners. A return to Barcelona has also been speculated, despite Bergvall’s previous rejection of the club. The player’s departure could open up opportunities for other midfielders, while providing Spurs with significant funds for further recruitment.
