Tom Bischof will wear the number eight shirt for FC Bayern Munich from the 2026/27 season, the club has announced. The move comes as Leon Goretzka is set to depart the Bavarian side following the expiration of his contract.
Bischof currently wears the number 20 for Bayern, having joined the club during a special FIFA transfer window last summer ahead of their Club World Cup participation. The midfielder arrived from Hoffenheim, where he previously earned a Fritz Walter Golden Medal as one of Germany’s top youth players in the U19 category.
During his first season in Munich, Bischof made 39 appearances across all competitions, contributing three goals and three assists. Despite a promising debut campaign under Vincent Kompany, he was not included in Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany squad for the recent World Cup.
Goretzka enjoyed a largely successful eight-year spell with Bayern, becoming a key figure in midfield. The club has not yet announced details of Goretzka’s destination, but his departure creates an opportunity for Bischof to establish himself as a prominent player in the Bayern midfield. The number eight shirt has a significant history at the club, and Bischof will hope to continue that tradition.
Bischof previously wore the number eight during the 2021/22 season while playing for Hoffenheim’s youth team, suggesting a personal connection to the number. This move signifies Bayern’s faith in the young player’s potential and their long-term plans for his development within the squad.
