Leonardo Bittencourt will not feature for Werder Bremen again this season due to a thigh injury, effectively ending his seven-year spell with the club, coach Daniel Thioune confirmed on Friday.
The 32-year-old’s departure was already set in stone with his contract expiring this summer, but the injury rules out any potential farewell appearance for the Green-Whites.
Thioune detailed the situation during a press conference ahead of Bremen’s Bundesliga match against Hoffenheim, stating that a return to training next week is “almost impossible,” subsequently eliminating any chance of inclusion in the final matchday squad against Borussia Dortmund.
Bittencourt arrived at Werder Bremen in 2017 from FC Köln, becoming a consistent performer in midfield for the club through periods of both Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga football.
During his time in Bremen, the Brazilian-born German international amassed 188 appearances, contributing 20 goals and 16 assists. He was a key figure during Bremen’s promotion campaign back to the Bundesliga in 2022.
While Bremen will be losing a seasoned midfielder, the club has already begun to look towards the future, with reports suggesting they are actively pursuing midfield reinforcements during the summer transfer window.
Bittencourt’s next destination remains unclear, though a move within the Bundesliga or a return to 2. Bundesliga is a possibility, given his experience and familiarity with German football. He will be available on a free transfer, potentially attracting interest from a number of clubs.
His departure marks the end of an era for Werder Bremen, losing a player who consistently provided energy and creativity in midfield over a significant period of time.
