VfL Bochum managing director Ilja Kaenzig has expressed the club’s desire to re-sign Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka, though acknowledging a return may not be imminent. Kaenzig revealed Bochum’s long-term ambition to welcome Goretzka back to the Ruhrstadion, potentially after the stadium’s ongoing renovations are completed. The player’s current contract with Bayern Munich is set to expire this summer, leading to speculation about his future.
Kaenzig highlighted Goretzka’s positive impact on the club’s fanbase, stating the midfielder “made many people in Bochum proud.” He suggested that Goretzka will continue to compete at the highest level for some time before considering a return to his boyhood club, indicating a willingness to wait for the right moment. The club official alluded to the possibility of Goretzka signing a final contract with Bochum once his playing days at the elite level are over.
Goretzka initially rose to prominence during his time with Bochum, featuring in 36 games for the club during the 2012-13 season. During that campaign, he contributed four goals and eight assists, establishing himself as a key player before moving to Schalke 04. His performances for Schalke then earned him a transfer to Bayern Munich in 2018, where he has since become a regular fixture in the midfield.
Despite Bochum’s aspirations, reports suggest Goretzka is more likely to pursue opportunities outside of Germany. However, Kaenzig’s comments demonstrate the club’s enduring affection for the player and their openness to a future reunion. A return for Goretzka would undoubtedly provide a significant boost to Bochum, both on and off the pitch, and would be a popular move amongst the club’s supporters. The club’s renovation plans may be a key factor in attracting Goretzka back to the Bundesliga.
