VfL Bochum have confirmed the signing of Babis Drakas from Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer, with the player penning a deal until June 30, 2029. The 23-year-old attacker will wear the number 27 shirt for the Bundesliga side.
Drakas spent the 2023-24 season with Borussia Dortmund’s reserve team, competing in the Regionalliga West. He registered a productive campaign, scoring six goals and providing ten assists in 31 appearances for BVB II. Prior to joining Dortmund, Drakas progressed through the youth ranks at various clubs in Germany, demonstrating consistent attacking output at the youth level.
The move to Bochum offers Drakas the opportunity to step up to the Bundesliga, having previously featured in the fourth tier of German football. Bochum, who narrowly avoided relegation last season, are actively reshaping their squad ahead of the upcoming campaign, and Drakas represents a relatively low-risk, high-reward addition.
Simon Zoller, Bochum’s director of football, highlighted Drakas’s versatility and potential. “Babis can be deployed on both wings, thus increasing our flexibility on the flanks,” Zoller stated, according to the club’s official announcement. He further praised Drakas’s pace and directness, adding that the player “complements the existing player types perfectly” and possesses “further potential for development”.
This is Bochum’s seventh signing of the summer transfer window, signalling an ambitious approach to strengthening the squad. The addition of Drakas provides manager Thomas Letsch with another attacking option and increased competition for places in the forward line. The signing could prove crucial as Bochum aim to establish themselves as a consistent Bundesliga side.
