Boniek backs Lewandowski for Juventus move, says striker could score 20 in Serie A
Juventus legend Zbigniew Boniek has publicly endorsed a potential move for Robert Lewandowski, stating the veteran Barcelona striker could score 20 goals in Serie A. The comments come amid reported interest from the Italian club in the 35-year-old Polish international, whose contract at Camp Nou expires this June, potentially making him a free agent.
Speaking in an interview, Boniek, a former Juventus star and ex-president of the Polish Football Association, described Lewandowski as a "robot" for his professional dedication and backed his ability to succeed in Italy. "If he wants to live another two years battling every Sunday to win, Juventus would be a beautiful challenge and the ideal place," Boniek said, according to the report. He added that he had often joked with Lewandowski in the past that to be considered a true goalscorer, he must prove himself in Italy's top flight.
The context for Boniek's remarks is a pivotal summer for Juventus, who are seeking to end a six-year Serie A title drought. The club is also engaged in contract renewal talks with current striker Dusan Vlahovic, whose deal also runs until 2025. When asked to choose between keeping Vlahovic or signing Lewandowski for immediate success, Boniek suggested a dual approach: "After six years without a scudetto, if I want to win immediately I keep Vlahovic and I add Lewandowski."
Boniek pointed to Lewandowski's relentless trophy-winning record at Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona as proof of his winning mentality. He dismissed concerns about the striker's age, noting his exemplary physical condition and lack of major injuries. "He seems younger than his age," Boniek stated. "I am convinced that Lewandowski can still play a couple of great seasons. It's more a question of head and motivation."
The former winger drew a comparison to Luka Modric's impactful season at AC Milan but noted the greater difficulty for a striker of that age in Italy. Despite this, he expressed supreme confidence in Lewandowski's innate scoring ability. "Lewandowski has goals in his blood," Boniek said. "He has scored always and everywhere, even at 50 he won't lose his nose for goal."
A move would represent a new challenge for Lewandowski in the final phase of his career, offering Juventus a proven, short-term goalscoring solution without a transfer fee. For Barcelona, it would clear a significant salary from their wage bill as they continue to navigate financial constraints. The potential deal hinges on Lewandowski's desire for a final competitive challenge and Juventus's ability to structure an offer within their financial parameters, all while managing Vlahovic's future.
